"Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezín" Murry Sidlin, Conductor
From a single copy of a smuggled score, Jewish musician Rafael Schaëchter taught Verdi's Requiem to fellow internees at the Terezín concentration camp, then led them in performances for others in the prison, including their Nazi captors.
Creator and guest conductor Murry Sidlin leads the Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, the Bemidji Chorale, the Bemidji State University Choir, soloists Carrie Mineck, Janet Hopkins, Nathan Carlisle, and Michael Mayes, and actors from Theatre B, in this powerful and inspiring multi-media performance.
This event is made possible by a generous gift from the Neilson Foundation and an Arts & Cultural Heritage Grant from the Region 2 Arts Council. In partnership with Minnesota Public Radio, MPR members are eligible for a $2 discount on tickets.
"This is an event not to be missed by anyone who is willing to have his or her life changed forever." - Leonard Slatkin, former music director of the National Symphony Orchestra.
