Comedy for a Cause: Shannon Whaley Presents a Benefit for New Beginnings
New Beginnings' mission is to provide shelter, advocacy and support for battered women and their children; and to change attitudes and social institutions that foster and perpetuate violence.  New Beginnings provides services to those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence  physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. Some who use their services are in physical danger. Others are living with controlling partners in relationships that are emotionally abusive.

Before I was a hairstylist and stand up comic, I was a domestic violence and drug and alcohol counselor.  I worked for New Beginnings as a shelter advocate and promised myself that as soon as I was able to, I'd donate money to the organization.  I realized I had a great opportunity to start using comedy as a fundraiser for the different organizations I believe in.  For my one year anniversary show, I'd like to honor New Beginnings.

This night is also dedicated to some of the comics that have helped me get to where I am.  JR Berard gave me my first five minutes at his monthly show, Who Shot JR?.  Rick Taylor gave me time on his holiday show, Holiday Hulabaloo, and it was my favorite show to date.  Leviticus Waite gave me my first headlining spot at his show, Mixed Bag Showcase.  Michelle Westford hasn't done anything for me YET, she's just funny as hell.  And Derek Sheen has done nothing for me, except made me laugh and gave me a sincere compliment that was very much appreciated.

Shannon Whaley will be your host, each comic will get 10-15 minutes and Derek will be headlining.  It's going to be a great show for a great cause.
