Cahiers du Cinema VERSUS Left Bank
Every film student (and their dog) knows perfectly well the story of the Nouvelle Vague and its permanent cinema shockwave. Dig deeper, however, and the roots of the "movement" reveal a mosaic of totally disparate worldviews, jarring stylistic differences, and gently competitive notions of cinema's responsibility to the world.
Before the Cahiers du Cinema crowd and the so-called Rive Gauche (Left Bank) posse began making waves at festivals, all they had were movie reviews and short films - and often just barely! Join us for a throwback to the cinematheques of old as we marvel at their trials and errors, genre lab experiments, and rigorous abstractions... and celebrate the first flashes of life from some of the 20th century's most important artists.
Introduced by Richard Brody, author of Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard
