Get your Orange on people!
The Orange: In the late afternoon glow of an orange-ish sun, sometime in early 2012 of course the exact date is bit like a magical mystery and may be lost forever in the haze at the crossroads. But rumor has it that sometime around then the first discussion of putting together a new group took place between two good friends. Both whom are local music instructors, both with years of live stage experience, both Beatle fanatics, and both players who had been looking for an opportunity to jam together. Mike Confrey, a guitar instructor, and Donnie Gray, a drum instructor, got together to talk about and imagine a psychedelic idea, to form a rock-n-roll band! And they already had in mind the players needed to sweeten the orange juice. Enter Terrie Sheaffer, an electric force of a singer on Vocals, and Robert Friedensen, perhaps one of the area's most solid players to handle the low register bass notes.
The Sun: The sun rises, and bass and lead vocals come in to round out the Orange. Robert Friedensen, a local bassist, also with years of live stage experience, and his near perfect steady groove-laying bass playing style. And Terrie Sheaffer, also a local vocalist, who oozes a sort of hypnotic sense of high energy singing with the range to cover the most demanding rock. Mike, already a constant figure in the local live music scene at the time was looking to expand his day trip with something new. Donnie, Robert, and Terrie, having had several years of playing together previously, had already developed a tight little wing of musical fire and flash between them. Born from the moment these four friends come together to jam, when Mike struck the first chord, Donnie cracked the first snare, Robert laid the first bass line, and Terrie hit the first soaring vocal, the chemistry was instantaneous, the energy palpable, and the excitement level burned like the Sun.
The Shine: When the chemistry is right, the Shine is bright. Mike Confrey, who's contemporaries compare him to a mixture of Johnny Winter and Jimi Hendrix, seems to play with the same searing guitar notes, the same raw emotion, and the same heart on his strings style as did those two once mighty guitar pioneers. Mike, having actually meet Johnny Winter several times, proudly displays Johnny's signature on one of his guitars literally and figuratively. Robert Friedensen, the only member of Orange Sunshine to have actually seen Jimi Hendrix live, lays down his solid foundation forming voodoo bass style, along with his ability to play so tightly in the pocket, has clearly taken his cues straight from the bass playing greats of the 60's era. Donnie Gray, who has spent years cultivating his chops by getting his creative influence from Ringo Starr, his technical cues from Neil Peart, and his unique senses from Alan White, blends attributes from those three drumming greats into his own style, one that is hard pounding, creative and unique, while leaving room for the technical touch and feel. Donnie, having met and talked all things drums with Alan, was born to be wild with drumming. Terrie Sheaffer, takes the stage in the form of Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and Bonnie Raitt all rolled into one, is that even possible?! It appears it is by bringing her raw energy, with a hint of foxy sexuality, and a trippy trance like style, which begs the question have you ever been experienced? Well, we have!
