Larry McCray
Hodi's Half Note Fort Collins, CO
In poker, three kings would normally be a pretty good hand. For blues guitarist Larry McCray, three kings (as is, B.B., Freddie and Albert) arenât enough, so he also draws inspiration from Albert Collins and Magic Sam for a winning hand. But McCray also has the superheated rock licks of Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers in his pocket, and today he is one of a handful of talented young blues performers leading the genre across boundaries and into the new century. McCrayâs dazzling guitar lines are matched with confident, soul-drenched vocals; understated funk rhythms and crunchy rock riffs meet searing slow blues and booty-bumping shuffles. Of late, McCray, with his unique crossover ability, has been lending his blues take on Grateful Dead classics and other rock numbers as part of Phil Lesh and Friends.
