Charles Lloyd Quartet featuring Zakir Hussain at the Bellevue Jazz Festival
Charles Lloyd, legendary jazz saxophonist and composer, was immersed in the rich musical life of Memphis, Tennessee, where he was born and exposed to jazz at an early age. Throughout his career Lloyd has played alongside and led several progressive postbop groups with the likes of Chico Hamilton, Cannonball Adderly, Herbie Hancock and many more. In the late 1960s, Lloyd's quartet fused straight-ahead post-bop, free jazz and world music, catching the attention of both jazz fans and critics. The group's commercial hit Forest Flower, Live at Monterey also achieved crossover success with rock fans. After a period of semi-retirement and a near death experience in 1986, Lloyd rededicated himself to music. He has since reestablished an active touring and recording schedule. 2002 brought together Lloyd's New Quartet with MacArthur Fellow and pianist Jason Moran and drummer Eric Harland, who is also part of Lloyd's Sangam trio with Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain. Hussain is regarded in the field of percussion and in the music world at large as an international phenomenon and one of the greatest musicians of our time. A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant and exciting performances have established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, and as one of India's reigning cultural ambassadors. Charles Lloyd performs alongside Jason Moran and Eric Harland with a special appearance by Zakir Hussain on Saturday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m.
