Dancing Earth, a Native American contemporary dance ensemble directed by choreographer Rulan Tangen, will make a rare Bay Area appearance with the local premiere of Tangen's evening length work "Of Bodies of Elements." The company of ten dancers and musicians explore the relationship between humanity within nature, from mythic narrative into contemporary relevance. Tangen puts forth cardinal stories, a Naragansett sunflower tale and other themes that will be woven metaphorically into a cultural and environmental fabric.

Indigenous worldview, respect for Mother Earth and environmental harmony is be reflected in every aspect of the production, from lighting design to body paint, as shaped by native collaborators. Eco-sustainable design and production are utilized so that the work represents Indigenous ecology in theme and execution. The performers morph from humans into constellations, gardens of plants, winged insects and animals with unbelievable physicality, enhanced by costumes made from recycled fabrics, organic silks, and bicycle tubing. The mobile set design of reclaimed cardboard and red willow is part of the dance, illustrating the relationship between the beings and their home environment.

Dancing Earth stands distinctively in American dance as the nation's premier Indigenous Contemporary Dance Ensemble. Director/Choreographer Rulan Tangen brings 25 yrs of international professional experience in powwow, ballet, modern dance, circus arts, film, theater and education. She has cultivated an entirely indigenous creative team of dancers, composers, costume designers, filmmakers, visual artists and stage crew into the company's extended family.  Together they have been recognized as "One of the Top 25 to Watch" by Dance Magazine, for their distinctive performance rituals, which bring a powerful physicality rooted in inter-tribal cultural philosophies and aesthetics.

Since 2004, Dancing Earth has been presented at venues ranging from international festivals, cultural centers, museums, educational institutions, including: Roots Remix at Harbour Front Centre, Toronto; Centro Cultural de Recoleto, Argentina; Hemispheric Encuentro, Brasil; Heard Museum AZ; Santa Fe Dance Festival, NM; Native Wellness Institute Regional Conferences; Woodlands Cultural Centre, Canada; Dance Now NYC, St Johns Cathedral NYC; National Performance Network Showcase, Iowa; Idyllwild Arts, CA; UC Riverside Red Rhythms Festival.
