The Barak Marshall Company makes its Bay Area debut with a physical-theater work for 10 dancers. The Suzanne Dellal Centre's production of Barak Marshall's MONGER (as in a dealer or trader of a commodity, but often used in combination with, for example: a gossipmonger, a hatemonger, a warmonger or a fishmonger) tells the story of a group of servants, trapped in the basement of the house of an abusive mistress.

MONGER explores the dynamics of hierarchy, power, free will and the compromises one makes in order to survive.  The piece's narrative structure is drawn from several sources including the life and work of Bruno Shultz, Jean Genet's play "The Maids" and Robert Altman's film "Gosford Park."
Intensely athletic dancing is heightened by surreal theatrical vignettes, Marshall's movement is physical, sharp, fast, contains ethnic-contemporary motifs and is known for being highly emotive, visual and theatrical.

The score for MONGER combines elements of Gypsy, Balkan with classical and rock music including Balkan Beat Box, Handel, Verdi and National Public Radio's The Yiddish Radio Project.

MONGER was created at the Suzanne Dellal Centre in Israel in 2008. It premiered there as part of the International Tel Aviv Dance Festival to critical acclaim and then embarked on an extensive European tour ending the year with appearances at the Seoul International Dance Festival and in Beijing, China.
