The new musical Pollyanna will premiere on Friday, March 4 at the Paradise Theatre in Paonia, Colorado. Written by Paonia playwright Marty Durlin, the play contains more than 20 original tunes performed by a cast of 19, along with a small musical ensemble.
Based on the 1913 novel by Eleanor H. Porter, Pollyanna tells the story of an orphan who comes to stay with her Aunt Polly and transforms not only her heartless relative but everyone else in the town as well. Walt Disney adapted the book into a movie starring Hayley Mills in 1960.
Pollyanna will be directed by Paonia Players' Merrily Talbott, who directed Grease in 2009 and a Broadway musical revue called It's Time to Start Livin' last summer. A former high school English and theatre teacher, she recently directed a production of Bye Bye Birdie at the Eugenia Rawls Theater in Denver.
Starring as Pollyanna is Hotchkiss seventh-grader Rory Molacek. Her sister Lea is playing the orphan Jimmy Bean. Other children in the play include Poppy Lightfoot, Anika Carlson, Sadie Miller, Siena Podgorny, Marisa Edmondson and Seraya Talbott-Carey. Adult players include Eames Petersen, Pam Petersen, Jan Simmons, Sally Kane, Greg Peterson, Patty Naft, Amber McDaniel, Thea Deley, Mary Lee Hauze, Merrily Talbott and Jack Adams. Assistant director is Regna Jones, and vocal harmonies are by Holly Sweetwood.
Durlin's musical play, Babbitt, based on the 1922 novel by Sinclair Lewis, was performed in February 2009 at the Paradise Theatre to sold-out houses.
Pollyanna will run Fridays and Saturdays, March 4-5 and March 11-2, at 8 pm, and Sundays, March 6 and March 13, at 2 pm. For ticket information, call the Paradise Theatre at 970-527-6610. Online tickets will be available February 15th at www.paradiseofpaonia.com.
