Brass Mafia - New Orleans Style Marching Band gone hillariously funky
Jazz at Pearl's San Francisco, CA
Musical mayhem, marching band madness and blow-out-the-windows musical power is the hallmark of San Franciscoâs most raucous and high-quality New Orleans style marching band, the Brass Mafia. The Brass Mafia is the latest project of the Jazz Mafia, the innovative, high-energy collective of cutting edge San Francisco musicians led by trombonist Adam Theis and including many of the most talented and adventurous musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area
Based on the tried-and-true New Orleans brass ensemble, the Brass Mafia includes trombone, trumpet, saxes, drums and most importantly TUBA! But while the band is based on a 100-year-old tradition, the group's sound incorporates music from many different decades and continents.
The Brass Mafia puts a strong emphasis on heavy backbeats, creative improvisation and a unique mix of songs and arrangements. They've proven themselves a powerful and entertaining Marching Band as well as one of the best nightclub bands in the City! Their many sold out shows attest to that!
The Brass Mafia features Theis on Sousaphone, Mike Olmos and Joel Ryan on trumpets, Joe Cohen on saxophones, Danny Grewen on trombone and Pat Korte on drums, with frequent special guests dropping in. Collectively, these musicians have played with headliners like Lavay Smith, Bobby McFerrin, Carlos Santana, Idris Muhammed, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Los Angelitos and the Marcus Shelby Orchestra.
And of course, as members of Theisâ Jazz Mafia group, these musicians have helped lay the foundation of the collectiveâs many ensembles, most of which are startling in their accessible originality, but, more importantly, are just plain delightful. Cannonball, the Realistic Orchestra, the Shotgun Wedding Quintet, the Shotgun Wedding Hip-Hop Symphony and the Low End Theory are all branches of the Jazz Mafia family. Like all these bands, the Brass Mafia starts with a fiery stylistic coreâin this case, New Orleans marching band musicâand expands to incorporate jazz, blues, funk, hip hop, rock and who knows what else into a gumbo of high-test musical fun.
