The Threepenny Opera
Montgomery Auditorium Durant, OK
Written in 1928 as an "opera for beggars," the show received immediate acclaim at its premier in Berlin. The story follows the murderous and villainous Macheath ("Mack the Knife") as he marries Polly Peachum, daughter of the leader of beggars in Victorian London. The show is noted for its early impact on avant-garde theatre with a political emphasis, as well as for its opening number, "Mack the Knife" (made famous as a single by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra).
