Rhythm Blast
This program brings together student performing ensembles from three Montgomery County Elementary schools, Arcola, Pine Crest, and Forest Knolls, to perform music from Africa and the Caribbean.
The Arcola Zimbabwean Marimba Ensemble is made up of eighteen 4th and 5th grade students from Arcola Elementary School who meet weekly to play polyphonic music in the style of the Zimbabwean mbira and marimba music that was introduced in the United States by Dumisani Maraire. Anne Burson directs the ensemble.
The group from Pine Crest Elementary includes twelve 5th graders and ten 4th graders. Their selections represent the culture of Jamaica. The 5th graders play Steel Pan instruments and the 4th graders accompany them on Xylophones. Mrs. Claire Hunte is their director.
The Sogo African Rhythm Ensembl is made up of twenty-nine 4th and 5th grade students from Forest Knolls Elementary School. They perform traditional music and dance of Ghana, West Africa. Their Director, Louis Persic, is assisted by 7th grade volunteer, Nic Quintana.
