This PROUD TO BE . . . ME! concert celebrates our pride in ourselves, expresses our self-love and acceptance of all we areyoung, old, thin, fat, tall, shortany and every aspect of ourselves. We are in this world to be fully ourselves, not to live up to others' standards or expectations. We are here to live, love, explore, grow, try, fail, succeed, and celebrate our authentic selves. This concert is to celebrate this journey and remind us to stand strong in the face of pressure to conform and ill-fitting societal expectations. And it's gonna be fun!!
In the proud tradition of Artemis Singers, we will be performing woman-affirming choral music written or arranged by women, providing opportunities for lesbians to be visible, expressing sometimes-radical political perspectives, and being an integral part of the Chicago feminist women's community.
Songs in this year's Pride Concert evoke elements of the strength and vibrancy the feminist community:
* The world premiere of "Whispering of Angels" by current Artemis Singers member Karen Mooney. * "I Enjoy Being a Dyke," parody of the Rogers & Hammerstein classic, "I Enjoy Being a Girl"). * k.d. lang's "Big Boned Gal." * "All About That Bass," with a few feminist twists. * The Wyrd Sisters "Warrior." * "True Colors" * "You Get Proud by Practicing," brought to us vai our connection to Sister Singers Network, with words by Laura Hershey and music by Diane Benjamin * "Common Woman," by Marla Beth Elliot of The Righteous Mothers. * "We Are" by Ysaye M Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock speaks to the pride theme in a special way, reminding us of the power of perspective. * And more! You'll have to come listen for yourself!!
About Artemis Singers Still going strong after 35 years, Artemis Singers: Chicago's Lesbian Feminist Chorus is comprised of women with diverse backgrounds who are dedicated to performing music written or arranged by women. The chorus works to effect positive change in cultural attitudes toward women and women artists, as well as to increase the visibility of lesbian feminists.
Our goal in selecting and performing music is to provide an emotionally moving, spiritually and aesthetically uplifting, and politically motivating experience to our audience. We want to entertain, amuse, and educate; to highlight historical, political, and personal events and experiences common to women; and most of all, to share a sense of community with our audience. We put on public concerts once or twice a year, as well as performing at private functions and fundraisers by invitation.
Membership is open to all women singers, regardless of musical background. No audition is required.
We are a self-directed chorus; we have no paid director. Women who choose to direct Artemis Singers may direct one or many songs, and we may have six or more different directors during the course of any single performance. Our music is selected at meetings open to any member who chooses to participate.
