A Night At The Oscars
This is the world premier of a great new play by Peter Quilter. Mr. Quilter is the playwright of "Glorious", which had a great run at this Malibu playhouse. Quilter is also the playwright of the current West End of London hit "End of the Rainbow", a story about the end of Judy Garland's life. "End of the Rainbow" is being slated for a Broadway run in 2012. How did an initimate theatre like the Malibu Stage Company get the rights to a world premier of a Peter Quilter play? It's a quirky story. Mr Quilter had sent a copy of the unfinished script to MSC's artistic director for use in his scene study class. After working with the script for some time it was very evident that Mr. Quilter had created something special with this play. MSC workshoped the play for 6 months and came out with a "translated" version of the script that Mr. Quilter found delightful. The die was cast.
This play allows us to see inside the life of two great Hollywood stars in their later years. Mr. Chance is still getting work and offers while his wife Diana is reduced to begging for work. She suffers from Meryll Streep envy. The strength of their relationship is the common thread of their careers and a great sense of humor. This unbridled humor is on display thoughout the play so that we have a continually uplifting chance to laugh and enjoy some great characters, flashing from the past to the present and vice versa. It's a hoot!
