"EVALUATING EARNED VALUE PERFORMANCE AGAINST EARLY and LATE CPM DATES"
JANUARY 13th, 2011
Earned value management (EVM) is a powerful tool for evaluating the cost and schedule performance of projects. It is useful for understanding not only historical project execution, but also for predicting future results. Unfortunately, existing earned value metrics do not fully leverage the information produced using Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling techniques. Specifically, traditional EVM methods only utilize the early start and early finish dates of resource-loaded network activities to derive earned value metrics. This presentation will describe why the use of early network dates alone is problematic for performance measurement, and presents a simple mathematical model for incorporating and comparing both early and late dates in earned value analysis. Steve Wageman proposes the adoption of two new earned value metrics – Adjusted Planned Value and EV Float Ratio Index – to more realistically assess actual project status relative to the baseline plan. The presentation will include a basic review of EVM concepts.
Steven W. Wageman, CCC PSP EVP, possesses 30 years of general and project management experience, and is currently the Director of Education and Training Programs at MWH Program and Project Management Services.
