The Retreat by local playwright Mark Cornell
Free Association Theatre Ensemble presents The Retreat

It's a little-known oddity of literary history that one particular writers retreat set Emily Dickinson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Stephen King, Anais Nin, and Dr. Seuss on their respective paths to greatness. At least that's the topsy-turvy notion behind Mark Cornell's The Retreat, which will be presented by Free Association Theatre Ensemble on January 14 and 15, and 20-22 in Cary.

As part of FATE's commitment to innovative projects, the ensemble is presenting two works by local playwrights as part of its 2011 season (Debbie Barrett's Oh, Baby! comes up in April). Mark Cornell lives in Chapel Hill and has had work presented in The ArtsCenter's 10 x 10 festival and in other venues across the country.

Cornell's play offers a glimpse into these writers' lives as we've never seen them (and frankly, as they never were): a repressed Anais Nin, a timid Stephen King, a haughty Seuss, a dimwitted Fitzgerald.  But their conflicts and passions during their three-week retreat are destined to change them forever.

Director John Paul Middlesworth says that "inverting our normal images of these writers is funny in its own rightâ€"a course, chain-smoking Emily Dickinson, for instanceâ€"but there's a genuine idea behind it all." It's partly about how writers turn their experience into the substance of their work, he says, adding, "it should be a blast for literati who can catch all the references."

Sara Croninger, Wyatt Geist, Thom Haynes, Brook Livingston and Jessi Nemeth portray the famous authors, while a series of outrageous scenes from their rough drafts are presented by Kurt Benrud, George Kaiser, Jessica Kent, Oliver Vest, Cassandra Wladyslava and Ken Wolpert.

Performances take place in FATE's performance space, located in the Harrison Pointe Shopping Center, 267 Grande Heights Dr, Cary, (corner of Harrison Ave and Maynard Dr).  Shows are at 8:00 PM January 14 & 15, 20-22. Tickets: $15 General Admission; $10 for students, seniors, military, educators. Special discounts can be found on the FATE Facebook page. Tickets can be purchased at the door with cash or check or at BrownPaperTickets.com with a credit card.  Reservations can be made by calling (919) 228-8184 or via email at FATEreservations@gmail.com
