Community Works Youth Theater Performance Series
The Reality of Us
Written & Performed by Roots Theater Ensemble at Academy of Arts & Sciences High School Directed by Ephraim Stempler, Assisted by Jay-Marie Hill

Mac and Aaliyah are both sophomores at the same school, but barely know each other. When they finally meet one fateful morning they learn they have similar circumstances
-- both of their moms have died, their dads are incarcerated, and their lives are spiraling downward fast. At first it seems they were destined to meet and help each other run away from their difficult lives and finally realize their dreams. But are they two trains running parallel toward hope or are their tracks intersecting in calamitous ways?

Roots, a program of Community Works, is a social justice theater class at Academy of Arts & Sciences High School in San Francisco for youth impacted by familial incarceration. This play was written by Roots Theater Ensemble, inspired by their life experiences.

The Rise of Kaos
Written & Performed by Community Works Youth Theater Ensemble (CWYTE) Directed by Ephraim Stempler & Jay-Marie Hill

Kaos is a 16 year old girl on a mission: to find the older brother she lost six years earlier after their mom and dad were simultaneously incarcerated. When their mother returns from jail, she yearns to reconnect with Kaos  but it's not so easy to start over from where they left off. When Kaos finally learns of her brother's whereabouts, it brings her closer to the truth  and a reunion she never could have expected.

Community Works Youth Theater Ensemble is a new after-school program for San Francisco high school youth impacted by parental incarceration. This play was written by the youth and inspired by some of their life experiences.
