The 2015 AIA|LA City Leaders Breakfast Series ::
the eleventh annual AIA|LA Breakfast Series

The 2015 AIA|LA CITY LEADERS BREAKFAST SERIES serves as an opportunity for architects & designers and other community stakeholders to meet directly with key individuals transforming Los Angeles in a roundtable setting to discuss innovative ideas that will ensure a healthy, sustainable and economically competitive future.

BARBARA ROMERO
Deputy Mayor, Mayor's Office of City Services

Barbara Romero, as Deputy Mayor for City Services, will replace Doane Liu, who is now chief of staff for Harbor Department Executive Director Gene Seroka.

Romero will oversee the Water and Power, Public Works, Transportation, Recreation and Parks, Library, Zoo, Animal Services, Cultural Affairs, El Pueblo de Los Angeles, Aging, and Disability departments.

"By overseeing critical city services ranging from water and power to transportation and infrastructure, this position touches people's lives in direct ways that are core to my back to basics agenda, and I am thrilled that Barbara Romero will continue to serve my administration in this new capacity," Mayor Eric Garcetti said.

Romero said she was "excited to help advance Mayor Garcetti's vision to ensure city services are delivered effectively, efficiently and where they are needed most."

Garcetti has nominated Director of External Affairs Heather Repenning to fill Romero's seat on the Board of Public Works.

During her time on the Public Works board, Romero served on a mayoral team focused on the city's water conservation programs, oversaw the city's switch to a waste franchise system and contributed to Los Angeles River revitalization efforts.

Prior to being appointed to the board, Romero worked for a decade at the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

Her most recent role at MRCA was Chief of Urban Projects and the Watershed Planning Division. As the liaison to local, state, and federal legislators on park planning issues, Romero handled legislative policies and project funding strategies, and managed more than $20 million in funds for urban park projects.

At MRCA, Romero also focused on identifying, developing and implementing multiple park development, restoration, and acquisition projects primarily in urban areas along the Upper Los Angeles River and tributaries. She also served as an executive board member for the Los Angeles River Revitalization Corporation.

In addition, Romero was a member of the Los Angeles Planning Commission and previously served as a Field Deputy for State Senator Richard Polanco, where she was an advocate, community organizer and public speaker addressing a variety of state issues, including the promotion of "signed into law legislation."

As part of the Los Angeles Conservation Corps' Building Up Los Angeles Program, Romero managed the East Los Angeles Americorps job employment program, and she earlier worked as a community organizer for the Roosevelt High School Healthy Start Program.

Romero received her bachelor's degree at UCLA and has been involved in community service throughout Los Angeles, including founding the Girls Today Women Tomorrow Leadership Mentoring Program and serving on the Los Amigos Council for Para Los Ninos.
