Studio Gallery Wright Presents Amon Tobin
Hodi's Half Note Fort Collins, CO
Somewhere back in the mid-90s a fresh-faced Brazilian ex-pat living in the UK decided he was going to put down his harmonica, pick up a sampler and name himself after a Stephen King novel. With Cujoâs âAdventures In Foam,â Amon Tobin announced himself to the music world. Since that auspicious beginning, Tobin (using his own name) has remained an innovator in electronica, shifting from his early creation of groovy vibes through jazz and beats, highlighted by blasts of bossa nova, batucada and jungle, toward a sound of darker intensity with an electronic soundtrack-like quality that is, if only slightly, more representative of Tobinâs ever-changing musical outlook. Yet, it should be noted, Tobin does not simply employ reconstituted vinyl (aka records) samples like so many of his contemporaries. Rather, Tobin creates his own sound files by recording robotics, animals, insects, musicians, utensils, motorcycles, and any of a thousand other things that make interesting noises that can be manipulated and reshaped into something fresh. Even today, as one of he best known figures in electronica, Tobin continues to push the sound envelope, still influencing scores of others who can only hope to keep up.
