The Mikado by W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan

Follen Church
Lexington, MA

For four decades and more, the Youth and Junior Choirs of Follen Community Church have been performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas every June. This tradition, begun by former Music Director Louise Curtis and the Follen Players' director Marilu Nowlin, is now in the hands of the present Director of Music, Thomas Stumpf, ably assisted by Holly Stumpf, who conducts the Junior Choir and is best known in Lexington as Harrington School's music specialist; by lighting designer Tom Christman, set designer Steve Ervin and pianist Eric Mazonson; and by a multitude of enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. You are invited Follen's 46th presentation of the topsy-turvy world of Gilbert and Sullivan's perennial favorite: "The Mikado." The bitingly witty verses of Gilbert and the utterly delightful music of Sullivan cast their spell over a story of ancient Japan while - as always - lampooning British attitudes and mores. Learn how the ex-tailor Ko-Ko, sentenced to death for flirting, became Lord High Executioner of Titipu; find out why Nanki-Poo, the heir to the throne of Japan, took up the Second Trombone; see the gorgeous (and vain) Yum-Yum fight over the same young man with the not-so-gorgeous (but equally vain) Katisha; discover just how many important positions one great Pooh-Bah can hold at the same time; and learn what special relationship the “humane” emperor has to boiling oil....
Over 60 kids in grades 2 through 12 and their parents have been working with tremendous energy and enthusiasm and inspiring dedication to make the production sound and look wonderful.
