Reading, Writing, and Carbon Reductions: Global Warming and Schools
Come to an event by the Zero Waste Alliance and its Sustainable Oregon Schools Initiative (SOSI): "Reading, Writing and Carbon Reductions,"  Portland Center Stage in the Gerding Theater at the Armory, the first LEED Platinum performing arts facility in the world.

The event begins with 3rd graders from Forest Ridge Elementary (Salem-Keizer School District) teaching us about global warming and carbon offsets. Next, Jill Sughrue, trained by Al Gore and the Climate Project, presents An Inconvenient Truth.  David Van't Hof, sustainability policy advisor to the governor, will talk about the Governor's Global Warming Initiative, and how Oregon's K-12 schools can support it.

The event will conclude with a 3-member panel speaking about areas in which schools can take action to reduce their impacts on global warming. Dave Cone, Gresham-Barlow School District, will describe his district's award-winning energy conservation measures and their impact; Kevin Downing, Oregon DEQ, will speak on school bus impacts and opportunities and Scott Bricker, Bicycle Transportation Alliance, will talk about state-wide efforts at schools to increase biking and walking, a win-win for student and environmental health. Time for Q+A will be provided.

Immediately following the program there will be a tour of the Gerding Theater at the Armory.  This is an opportunity to learn about the Portland Armory's sustainable design and construction and offers new perspectives and highlights the importance of minimizing our impacts on the environment.

The Gerding Theater at the Armory has been awarded the LEED Platinum designation from the US Green Building Council, the highest sustainable design award available for a building in the United States. With this award it becomes the first building on the National Register of Historic Places to achieve Platinum status. It is also the first performing arts facility, and the first historic building on the west coast, to be so designated.

This event will be informative for the entire community including school staff, business and government folks, parents and students.
