Behind the scenes of New York City's Great White Way, virtuosos of stagecraft have built the scenery, costumes, lights, and other components of theatrical productions for more than a hundred years. But like a good magician who refuses to reveal secrets, they have left few clues about their work. Blue-Collar Broadway recovers the history of those people and the neighborhood in which their undersung labor occurred.
Dr. Timothy R. White is an Assistant Professor of History at New Jersey City University where he teaches urban and modern U.S. History. He is traveling professor with NJCU's Study Abroad program and avid theater-goer. His articles have been published by the Journal of Urban History, the London Transport Museum, and the Theatre Library Association.
The NJCU Musical Theatre Workshop will provide attendees with an enjoyable mix of Broadway songs, performed by current and past students as a benefit concert. Under the leadership of Marc G. Dalio since 2009, Musical Theatre Studies at NJCU is an expanding concentration within the Music/Dance/Theatre program. Since 2009, Musical Theatre students in the Workshop have created celebrated productions of Godspell, Once on This Island, City of Angels, Urinetown, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Cabaret, Avenue Q, Les Misérables, Little Women, and Smokey Joe's Cafe.
All funds raised will be donated to Art House's STAGES! Theater Company for Youth.
