The Motherlode: Songs and Stories From the Vein
In this rare performance for grown-ups only, singer-songwriter Charity Kahn returns to her roots to tap the vein of songs and stories born during her first seven years of motherhood (she is the mama of two sons, ages 4.5 and 7.5). Charity is joined by Olive Hackett-Shaughnessy, professional storyteller and mother of two daughters (30 and 28) and a son (24). Through lyrical and spoken narratives, two woman artists express their personal experiences of being mothers, exploring territory from their nerve endingsâ¦raw, open, wonderful, terrifying, sometimes funny but always real. Intertwining original compositions with old traditional stories, they will sound out the dark-and-light journey of being a mother every dayâ¦from raw to awe, newborn to empty nest, a celebration of the transformation from womanhood to motherhood.
Charity Kahn -- mother, musician, performer, teacher, songwriter, and recording artist -- is the founder of the JAM Music and Movement Experience for young children and their parents, and the award-winning family music group, Charity and the JAMband. She teaches music and movement classes for families around the San Francisco Bay Area, and performs both solo and with her JAMband at schools, libraries, clubs, and festivals throughout Bay Area and beyond. Her family music recordings have won numerous awards (Parents Choice GOLD, Children's Music Web, Fids and Kamily Poll Best of 2006), have received national acclaim and press, and are spun regularly on XM Kids and other children's radio programs. She strives to spread joy, connection, and family fun through song, dance, and silliness, and has been rocking the kids ever since she became a mom. This from Olive: "My goal as a professional storyteller is to bring the riches of this art form into the places children gather together and to act as a resource in curriculum development for parents and teachers.
My skills with language, my comprehension of the academic value of storytelling and understanding of child development have evolved from my work as a writer, a parent, and a teacher of English as a Second Language to adults.
But at the core of my work is the magic. Love, courage, honesty, fidelity and hope are what I try to bring forward from the heart. Through beauties, beasts, fairies, peddlers and creatures of the earth, the child listener finds her deepest longings and most enormous questions touched in an intimate moment between adult and child."
