DUKE ROBILLARD Band at The Conway Muse
December 5 Sunday - The DUKE ROBILLARD BAND
In the Renaissance Room. All ages. $25.
"Duke's one of the great players" - B.B. King
"a soloist of stunning force and originality" - The New York Times
The W.C. Handy Awards have named Robillard "Best Blues Guitarist" no less than four times, and his versatility as a session player allowed recordings with Bob Dylan, John Hammond, Dr. John, Maria Muldaur, Ruth Brown and Jimmy Witherspoon. He's also toured with Tom Wait's band.
Duke started the band Roomful of Blues back in 1967, playing until 1979. then briefly with rockabilly king Robert Gordon, then cut 2 albums with the Legendary Blues Band (former members of Muddy Waters' bands), then led his own group until 1990, then replaced Jimmy Vaughn in the Fabulous Thunderbirds before fronting his own band once again.
Duke has returned to his grittiest roots - dirty, house-rockin', shack-shakin',finger-bustin', down-in-the-bottom git-tar blues.
Joining Duke for this appearance are Bruce Bears on keyboards, Brad Hallen on bass and Mark Teixiera on drums.
One of the most versatile and accomplished guitarists playing today, Robillard has always been fascinated by the roots of American popular music - and he's tackled everything from blues to the classic American songbook to jazz guitar duets, rock-influenced trios, small and big band swing recordings. Along the way, he's earned no less than four Guitarist of the Year awards from the Blues Foundation, and was this year chosen Traditional Male Blues Artist.
The LaRosa Trio will open the concert with blues, jazz, standards and Latin rhythms (Oscar DeLaRosa, Congas, Phil Nakano, Percussion and Reeds, Jim Bergquist, Keys)
