SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble dir by Dr. Dee Spencer - The future of Jazz
Jazz at Pearl's San Francisco, CA
Since Jazz at Pearl's first Future of Jazz series several of the featured performers such as Julian Pollack & the Lebouef Brothers have gone off to college and on to very successful careers. These kids grow up fast so make sure you catch them now. The 8 PM show will be a formal concert and the 10PM show will be a Jam Session led by Dr. Dee Spencer.
7x7 featured some of these extremely talented youths in their Hot 20 list last year:
The Rhythm Section SFJAZZ All-Star High School Quintet Billy Buss, 18, trumpet; Ruthie Price, 20, drums; Jesse Scheinin, 17, tenor saxophone; Nick Underwood, 21, bass; Julian Pollack, 18, piano.
Wynton Marsalis once described jazz as âmusic that swings.â Which explains its improvisational nature, its independentâyet simultaneousâmelodies and varying degrees of pitch. The 2006 members of the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Quintetâan elite group chosen from the larger SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensembleâare torchbearers for jazz legends past and present. Theyâve jammed with the likes of Chick Corea, Joshua Redman and Branford Marsalis, but make no mistake, these five are very proud Generation Y citizens.
ROCK STEADY While their career aspirations range from the obvious (jazz musician) to the academic (professor of African-American studies), they share one fantasy: becoming a rock star. âSometimes I just like to rock out and scream, and jazz just doesnât do that for me,â says bassist Nick Underwood. âI only really became a serious musician when I started listening to ska.â Drummer Ruthie Price has a thing for Marilyn Manson, saxophonist Jesse Scheinin commits Radiohead songs to memory and trumpeter Billy Buss grooves on â70s funk.
BRASS RING âIâd love to play with Tower of Power,â says Buss, whoâs off to Berklee College of Music in Boston on a full scholarship after winning the Jimmy Lyons Memorial Scholarship at the Monterey Jazz Festival earlier this year. âTheir horn section rocks.â with these extremely talented teenagers.
The SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensembles program provides advanced-level training and performance opportunities for some of the most talented musicians in the nation. Selected annually by competitive audition, the All-Stars rehearse and perform with today's top jazz educators and artists.
In addition to the award-winning Big Band, the program features workshops and training in small ensemble performance, composition, jazz theory, improvisation, orchestration, arranging, and music business. Through the SFJAZZ Meet the Masters program, Ensemble members enjoy regular workshops, masterclasses and mentoring sessions with leading artists, such as Joshua Redman and the SFJAZZ Collective, Terence Blanchard, Yusef Lateef, Ravi Coltrane, and Stefon Harris.
Founded in 2001 by esteemed jazz educator Dr. Dee Spencer, the Ensemble has appeared at the San Francisco Jazz Festival (annually since 2001), SFJAZZ Spring Season (annually since 2004), Jazz at Lincoln Ce
