FAY GRIM (AFF CLOSING NIGHT FILM + PARTY!)

Landmark Midtown Art Cinemas
Atlanta, GA

In the early 90s, Hal Hartley established himself as a stalwart of the indie film community with films such as THE UNBELIEVABLE TRUTH, TRUST, and SIMPLE MEN before making what many consider his masterwork, HENRY FOOL in 1998. He returns this year with FAY GRIM, a sequel to that film. Fay Grim (Parker Posey), a single Mom from Woodside, Queens, is afraid her 14 year old son, Ned, will grow up to be like his father, Henry, who has been missing for seven years. Fay's brother Simon is serving ten years in prison for aiding in Henry's escape from the law. In the quiet of his cell, Simon has had time to think about the tumultuous years of Henry's presence among them. He has come to suspect that Henry was not the man he appeared to be. His suspicions are validated when CIA agent Fulbright (Jeff Goldblum) asks Fay to travel to Paris to retrieve Henry's property. Her mission turns into a sprawling con game, pitching Fay deep into a world of international espionage. You need't have seen HENRY FOOL to follow the action (though it's highly worth seeing), as the audience is brought up to speed quickly on the events from the first film. FAY GRIM is filled with the trademark Hartley elements - the quirky humor and deadpan delivery. Posey and Goldblum, as well as the rest of the cast, are perfectly tuned with Hartley's comic rhythm. Within the somewhat absurdist humor, Hartley explores how Americans interact with the world around them. By throwing his characters into the world of geopolitical intrigue, he takes a subtle look at the dangerous world we live in. Followed by the Closing Night Party at Magick Lantern
