theTABLE: Surveillance
theTABLE:
Food, arts, culture, politics, and community, in an environment free from assumptions and formal constraints; a thoughtful space where curiosity is required and conversation is encouraged.
While enjoying a gourmet brunch, we will explore an issue with experts alongside a visual or performing artist whose own work is inspired by the topic. You don't have to be an expert to participate, merely curious.
The surveillance state has long been a subject of science fiction. How the observance of behavior can be used against citizens. Have smart phones, drones, social media, and our own personal habits created a surveillance state?
Join artists and experts as we discuss the function and pitfalls of surveillance and ask: How have we let technology guide our everyday habits? What does our phone know about us that we wish it didn't? What is the difference between subversive observation and free information. Perhaps most importantly, how do large entities like governments and corporate interests use personal information we regularly and freely volunteer?
