Free Public Planetarium Shows
Bellevue College will be offering free public planetarium shows in its Willard Geer planetarium on Friday, March 13th at 7:00 and 8:30PM. The 7:00 show will include "The Little Star that Could" a children's show about the different types of stars, followed by "Wonders of the Universe". Children as young as five can attend if parents feel they can handle over an hour in the planetarium. The 8:30 show will consist of "Wonders of the Universe" followed by "New Horizons"
The "New Horizons" show follows a comet on a journey throughout the Solar System. From breathtaking landscapes to violent volcanic eruptions to the sheer beauty of Saturn's rings, explore the planets and moons of the solar system in a majestic journey through our celestial neighborhood. Audiences will travel down to the surface of the planets, and experience what life would be like from those brave new worlds.
In "Wonders of the Universe" the audience will peer deep into space through the eyes of the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and travel back billions of years in time to witness the birth of the universe. On this breathtaking excursion, you'll witness the formation of galaxies and explore some of the most wondrous nebulae and astronomical structures yet discovered.
The skies visible above Bellevue will also be discussed by show-giver Pat Beatie, who also gives all planetarium shows to visiting school groups. He'll point out the brightest stars and constellations so audience members can go home and stargaze from their own backyards.
The Planetarium is a special domed-ceiling room (room B-244) where the nighttime sky is accurately reproduced. Although kids as young as five can attend the 7:00 show which includes "Little Star", the 8:30 show is not recommended for kids under the age of six. Because the room is dark during the show, there is no late admission. Parking is free in the parking garage after 3:00pm. Admission is free but reservations must be made in advance. Reservations can be made starting at noon on Friday, March 6th. Reservations can be made through brown paper tickets. For more information call the BCC Science Division at 425-564-2321.
