FIRST FRIDAY Music Series @ Galeria West - Sophisticated Brazilian Jazz with BOSSA BRASIL®
Since the inaugural concert in the summer of 2009 hundreds of music lovers have enjoyed the new FIRST FRIDAY Music Series, presented by TEATRO Si at the intimate Galeria West Art Gallery in downtown Westfield, NJ. This once a month live concert event continues to bring to the area a unique opportunity to enjoy a diversity of music genres as performed by a select series of renowned artists.
The FIRST FRIDAY events continue on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 7pm with the unique sophisticated Brazilian jazz fusion sounds by acclaimed percussionist Mauricio de Souza and his ensemble BOSSA BRASIL®.
Born in Brasília, Brazil, Maurício de Souza is a jazz drummer who easily performs in both traditional jazz and Brazilian jazz styles. His good taste and finesse have allowed him to play in numerous settings with various accomplished musicians. Maurício studied with world renowned jazz drummer and master teacher, Joe Morello for eight years. He also had a year of private studies with distinguished all-round percussion teacher Glenn Weber. Aside from the inspiration of Mr. Morello, other influential performers include Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Dave Weckl, Roy Haynes, and Bill Stewart.
Since settling in Northern New Jersey in 2004, de Souza has been very active in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, performing at some of the finest jazz clubs not only as a side man but also as a band leader. In New York, de Souza has been heard at Smoke Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Garage Jazz Club, Cornelia St. Cafe, Lenox Lounge, Bar Next Door, Cachaça Jazz N' Samba Club, Cleopatra's Needle, Kitano Hotel, Jule's Bistro, Cutting Room, Via Brasil, Brazil Grill, Village Underground, New York Athletic Club, and Bubby's (Brooklyn) to name a few. Internationally, Maurício has performed in Brasilia, Brazil at well known jazz venues. Oher performances include appearances as guest percussionist in numerous orchestral concerts with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro de Brasilia (Brazil).
De Souza's group, Bossa Brasil® performs the most sophisticated Brazilian music, including the exotic rhythms of the Baião and the Chorinho. The repertoire includes compositions from Brazil's most outstanding artists such as; Tom Jobim, Egberto Gismonti, Roberto Menescal, Milton Nascimento, Edu Lobo, Victor Assis Brasil, Hermeto Pascoal, Baden Powell and Pixinguinha.
The group members include Mauício de Souza on drums, Andrew Beals on alto sax, pianist Carl Viggiani and Gary Mazzaroppi on bass.
This special FIRST FRIDAY concert appearance will also feature selections from Mauício de Souzas' new Bossa Brasil® album, "Here. There..." through Pulsa Music (a Brazilian record label).
We hope you will join us often during the year to celebrate the arts in a unique setting. We recommend that you consider enjoying a fine meal before or after the concert at one of the fine eateries in quaint downtown Westfield and the surrounding area. Most are located within a short walk from the gallery. Proceeds from each event benefit theatrical programming efforts at TEATRO Si, a 501(c)3 New Jersey not for profit corporation.
