Amy Hanaiali`i and Slack Key Masters of Hawaii CD Release Concert
Four time Grammy® Nominee and multi Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Amy Hanaiali'i is set to release a groundbreaking collaboration with a number of Hawai'i's top slack key artists including Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi, Jeff Peterson, and Sonny Lim. The album, to be released on September 28th, features an hour of music with a vibrant array of new compositions and new adaptations of Hawaiian classics. It also features guitarist and vocalist Chino Montero for the first time since his recordings with the group Palolo. Each artist is featured as a performer and producer on the recording. From a Hawaiian interpretation of the Sting classic Fields of Gold to breath- taking duets on Ipo Lei Manu and Hi'ilawe to eight new compositions, the 16 songs on this recording demonstrate what happens when kindred spirits who share a deep respect for each other and Hawaiian culture come together to share their music. It is not a compilation CD but a collaboration celebrating the diversity and depth of Hawaiian music today.
Each of the artists on the recording is well established in the Hawaii music industry as a solo artist. The unique sound created on this recording showcases each artists but also brings the group together in a number of settings including full group kanikapila reminiscent of the classic Gabby Pahinui Band recordings of the 1970s, intimate duets and trios, new traditional and contemporary Hawaiian mele featuring slack key, ukulele, steel guitar, and acoustic bass, instrumental slack key celebrating the contributions of the Vaqueros and the evolution of this
Hawaiian guitar tradition, a country song recalling strains of Johnny Cash, and 19th Century songs from Hawaiian royalty. The talents of each performer is enhanced by the group settings and selection of material on the recording. The project was recorded at the new Soul Sound Studio in Kaneohe engineered
by Shawn Livingston Moseley. It was the perfect space for a collaboration of this kind.
"Working on this project was a complete joy," said Amy Hanaiali'i. "The Uncles are the true meaning of Hawaiian Music. There where Chicken Skin moments with every breath that I took. The studio represented the past , present and future of Hawaiian Music. From older classics to the birth of new compositions. The Uncles encouraged us every step of the way. The Kupuna where definitely present."
"This recording was the most meaningful project I have ever been involved with," Jeff Peterson said. "It was a great honor to work with many of the artists who have inspired me to play and compose music. The energy of the group in the studio was absolutely amazing. We shared so much together—creativity, camaraderie, spontaneity, passion, joy, laughter, gratitude, and above all, aloha. I look forward to sharing this music."
This concert at the Venue on October 20th at 7pm will celebrate the music on this recording in a unique and intimate setting.
