Touchdown Israel - Tackle Football in the Holyland Monday, March 23, 7:30pm
Directed by Paul Hirschberger USA | 2014 | 81 minutes | Documentary
Israel might be the last place you would expect the corn-fed, Friday Night Lights tradition of American football to catch on. But don't tell that to the passionate players and coaches in the 11-team Israel Football League, who play for nothing but pride and have had to endure years of matches played on woefully short soccer fields, under bad lighting, with no locker rooms, in front of an indifferent public. A surprising look at how the gridiron sport has found an unlikely toehold in the Holy Land, the film also examines the Jewish-Arab camaraderie (and occasional tensions) within the multiethnic lineup.
The 15th annual Northern Virginia Jewish Film Festival, powered by the JCCNV, will screen more than a dozen contemporary Jewish-themed and/or Israeli-made feature films that explore identity and place in the world. Festival home from March 19-29 is Angelika Film Center and Café at Mosaic. Opening night on March 19 features the new documentary Above and Beyond; other films to be screened are 24 Days, Apples from the Desert, Arlo & Julie, Beneath the Helmet-From High School to the Home Front, Disobedience-The Sousa Mendes Story, God's Slave, The Green Prince, Kidon, Life as a Rumor, Magic Men, The Outrageous Sophie Tucker, The Prince of Egypt, and Touchdown Israel-Tackle Football in the Holyland. Plus a live storytelling event by SpeakeasyDC. The schedule, descriptions and programs are posted at www.jccnvarts.org.
Single tickets are $12; senior (60+), active military and under 30 are $10; an all-access pass (excluding the opening event) is $64-$70; the closing night event is $14-$18. Online sales through Brown Paper Tickets; tickets will also be on sale at the door starting one hour prior to each screening.
