Democracy School: From Corporate Control to Community-Based Power
Communities across the country and Washington trying to stop a wide range of threats  such as oil trains, GMOs, fracking, factory farming, water privatization  all run into the same problem: they don't have the legal authority to say "NO" to what is harming them.

How is that possible in a system of government based on "We the People"?

Simple: Big corporations  and their allies   have been very busy manufacturing and fine tuning a structure of law over the last 150 years that insulates them from community control.

So how do we change the rules?

It takes a combination of understanding history, focusing on structural change, and organizing on the grounds of local, community self-government.

All of which has led 200+ communities in 10 states to confront corporate power in our communities and at the same time protect the health, safety, and welfare of people and the environment.

This 3-hour workshop will lead you through the following:

o   Why we have a corporate dominated, state-assisted structure of law
o   How it looks when communities try to find remedy within that system
o   What communities are doing to reclaim their rights for the sake of health and democracy for people, communities, and nature
o   How Oregon counties are moving "community bill of rights" to protect communities and move them towards sustainability

The Bioneers are engaged citizens from all backgrounds and fields who focus on solving our world's most urgent problems within a framework of interdependence: It's all connected. Just as the web of life is intricately interconnected, so too are all environmental and social issues. We take a "solve-the-whole-problem" approach that is holistic, systemic and multidisciplinary.

The Salish Sea Bioneers program serves as a social innovation lab; an interdisciplinary nexus of community-based inquiry and engagement, connecting and enriching existing leaders, organizations and initiatives through our annual conference, media libraries and year-round 'learning community' model. Founded in 2009, Homegrown is more than just a sandwich shop. Our goal is not only to create sandwiches out of sustainable ingredients but also to make sandwich creation sustainable itself. We consider our environmental impact for every ingredient choice, often between two competing theories: eating organic and eating local. We take the best from both worlds to create our sustainable sandwiches, salads and soups. We like to call this sandwich environmentalism. Learn more: http://www.eathomegrown.com
