Lorenzen/Scalet Treasure Trove: New CD Fallin'
Long-time KC musical favorites Beth Scalet (Kansas Music Hall of Fame Inductee) and Kathryn Lorenzen (veteran solo performer and alumni of bands from Millionaire at Midnight to The Vogues to Miss Major & Her Minor Mood Swings) have been friends and musical partners for many years. They've also been writing songs together since 1987. Most of the time Beth provides the lyrics and Kathryn composes the melody and arranges the music. Except for a few songs that slipped out to make appearances on Kathryn's CD Portfolio and Beth's Takin' the Cure, their song catalogue has been hiding under a basket.
But now, on Kathryn's new CD Fallin', she performs ten of these co-written gems to release on an unsuspecting world. The intelligent and inspired production of Fallin' shows that polished and slick are not the same, and that roots can go deep without being rough.
The songs range from the joyous to the wistful to the transforming, sometimes within the same song. Kathryn's versatile, crystal voice delivers them with a floating yet earthy certainty, and she recruited a top-drawer group of players and singers including Kelley Hunt, Albert Lee, Pat Tomek, Julie Major, Sebastian Alfie, Chad Watson, Laura Lynch, Victoria Wikiera, and many more. The cherry on top is an elegant and intimate cover of the classic "Walk Away Renee," giving a nod to the pop pedigree behind much of Lorenzen's music.
These are songs for grown-ups, songs that have been lived-in, for people who've had real lives. Now that Fallin' has opened the basket to show what's inside, we see it's full of sparkly, shiny stars just waiting to fly out.
