"Sabor y Memoria: A Musical Feast in Seven Courses" -Sol y Canto & Sweet Plantain String Quartet
From appetizer to dessert, a Latino musico-culinary, multi-sensory mix of music, images and flavor!
This new, multi-media suite for Latin ensemble and string quartet was composed by guitarist, composer and Sol y Canto musical director Brian Amador, MacDowell Artist Colony Fellow, who describes it this way: "Nothing ties us more firmly to our origins than food and music. The deepest, most distant memories can be triggered by a cooking aroma, an instant reminder of home. Sabor y Memoria explores the connections between music, food, and identity, combining Latin genres in much the same way that flavors are blended in the cuisine of a new land. The lyrics address issues such as slow food, immigration, nostalgia for one's home country, hunger, the joy of cooking and sharing food, and of course, chocolate!"
The concert features three-time Boston Music Award winners Rosi & Brian Amador with Sol y Canto's crackerjack Latin musical sextet and special guests genre-bending Sweet Plantain String Quartet, from NYC, accompanied by a backdrop of stunning food photographs by professional photographer Jon Chomitz as well as Owen Hartford and Rick Grossman, projected on a giant screen behind the musicians.
Combining Sol y Canto's driving, pan-Latin groove, featuring Rosi Amador's crystalline, passionate vocals with intricate string harmonies in rhythms from Puerto Rico, Peru, Cuba, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, and Panama, this work blends diverse musical genres in much the same way that flavors are blended in the cuisine of a new land.
The first half of this concert program is a selection of pan-Latin, jazz-infused acoustic roots songs from Sol y Canto, interspersed with contemporary string quartet music from their special guests, Sweet Plantain String Quartet. Sol y Canto plays material from their latest CD, Cada DiÃ,Âa un Regalo (Each Day a Gift), featuring original compositions by Brian Amador on themes of life, living in the present, social justice and love. Sweet Plantain performs genre-bending original compositions and arrangements, as well as contemporary works by Latin American composers, in a unique style fusing Latin, classical, jazz, and improvisational forms. Song selections will be announced from the stage by each ensemble.
The second half of the concert will feature both musical ensembles performing together in "SABOR Y MEMORIA: A musical Feast in Seven Courses," accompanied by visual imagery highlighting the themes of the suite.
But that's not all! After the concert, join the artists in a TAPAS reception featuring the fine food of "Viva Mexican Grill" Restaurant. Based in Wayland, native Mexican chef Carlos Mendez's food is scrumptious and delicioso. Photos taken at his restaurant are part of "Sabor y Memoria". Eat the real thing at the reception!
