ATOKA CHASE CD RELEASE PARTY After two years of running from venue to venue, show to show, and all up and down Route 81 as though their lives depended on it, Atoka Chase is ready to release their debut album. Grief, Sir, is the Shadow's Companion will see its debut on April 18th at Bright Box Theater!
A combination of songs from the very first day Maya gave Jared a banjo, to songs written after spending too many hours on the road, Grief, Sir encompasses the full breadth of emotions that inspired the duo to begin, and to continue, playing music together. What began as relationship between two self-styled solo musicians has evolved into a folk duo with a penchant for singling out the darkness in the world and giving it new life in the form of music made to polarize. From the title of the album itself (a nod to Saul Bellow's Herzog) the duo has attempted to play with the darkness in the world without wallowing in it.
Special opening performance of... THE DEVIL & BILLY MARKHAM [play by Shel Silverstein, music by Atoka Chase]
"A tour de force with the jokes coming Faust and furious." New York Post
In this amazing rendition of a tall tale written in rhymed couplets, Billy Markham, a songwriter down on his luck, loses a sucker's bet with the Devil. This one-man show from the eccentrically creative mind of Shel Silverstein is sure to get you laughing. While most widely known for his children's poetry and cartoons, please note that Shel Silverstein's The Devil and Billy Markham goes far beyond "Where the Sidewalk Ends"
"cleverly written and laugh-out-loud funny. It's even poignant at points. I would describe it (terribly) as Robert Johnson's devil-at-the-crossroads meets Dr. Seuss & Mark Twain's love child meets R. Crumb's Fritz the Cat. The macabre-Americana duo Atoka Chase performs perfectly-suited old-timey songs about death and heartache between acts. It's so fitting that I began to wonder if Shel Silverstein had also written music for the play. But no, he didn't. It's just these cool cats that stepped up to the plate when actor Jonathon Stewart asked them to participate." Jeremiah Jenkins, Old South High
"A rip snorting, raunchy delight. Very, very funny." -Associated Press
