Oscar Bettison's O Death
Inspired by an American folk song that gives the piece its title, O Death is a compelling evening-length composition by Peabody faculty member and British-born composer Oscar Bettison. O Death draws musical comparisons between the folk song and the Requiem Mass, or mass celebrated for the repose of the soul of the deceased. Bettison does this by translating popular musical influences, particularly blues and jazz, into the fluid format in which requiems are traditionally presented.
