Deciding once again on the Backroom's intimate atmosphere to end their US tour, Dervish will give two special performances on this Sunday in March. This will be our first ever "brunch" show which will combine the opportunity for a relaxing Sunday mid-day meal with a great trad concert.
And later that afternoon, a second show has been added at 4:30. March, post St. Paddy's day can be a dark time in Bostons, so having an afternoon like this to drive the cold winter away will be a welcome respite. This will be a special experience indeed for band and audience alike. Two shows one at 1:30, the other at 4:30 will sell out rapidly.
Dervish were included in the recently released Volume 1 of recordings from the series and performed in January at its triumphant release concert at the National Concert Hall in Dublin. They have been the definition of that great "big" sound of multiple member trad bands since their founding back in the 1989. With the spectacular vocals of Cathy Jordan and an all-star level of musicianship from each of the band members, this group is one of the most important of the last twenty years to spread the wealth of Irish traditional music around the world.
The Burren Backroom series is new and principled on intimate, informal presentations held in the atmospheric space created by well-known traditional musicians Tommy and Louise McCarthy in Davis Square, Somerville, Masachusetts.
Hosted by Brian O'Donovan of A Celtic Sojourn on WGBH radio, these gatherings will feature core performers from many different aspects of traditional music as well as special guests, and conversations around the music. As is the custom of the Burren, it is anticipated informal and dynamic post concert sessions will be a feature.
Tickets are $28 in advance, with a $5 discount for WGBH Members. If you are a member, send an e-mail to celtic@wgbh.org and we will send you the code.
