Urban Word mentor Regie Cabico and Executive Director Michael Cirelli curate and host a spoken word showcase by New York's young poets and their mentors who have taken top prizes at Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam competition, Speak Green at Sundance Film Festival, and the National Poetry Slam. See why they are the current reigning champions on HBO's Brave New Voices documentary... Regie Cabico is a spoken word pioneer having won the Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam and is the first openly queer and Asian American performer to take top prizes in the National Poetry Slam. Television credits include 2 seasons of HBO's Def Poetry Jam. He is the recipient of three New York Innovative Theater Award Nominations for his work in the New York Company of TOO MUCH LIGHT MAKES THE BABY GO BLIND, with an award for Best Performance Art Production. The Kenyon Review recently named him 'The Lady Gaga of Poetry' and Bust Magazine named him in the 100 Men We Love... Michael Cirelli is the Executive Director of Urban Word NYC, a grassroots non-profit organization that provides free, safe, uncensored and ongoing writing and performance opportunities for NYC teens. He is also the director of the Annual Spoken Word & Hip-Hop Teacher & Community Leader Training Institute at the University of Wisconsin that won the 2007 North American Association of Summer Sessions 'Creative and Innovative Program Award.' He is the author of the award-winning teaching guide, 'Hip-Hop Poetry & the Classics' (Milk Mug, 2004), a standards-based curriculum that explores the relationship between hip-hop lyrics and 'classic' poems. He is currently working on two other curricula utilizing hip-hop to engage students. His collection of poetry, 'Lobster with Ol' Dirty Bastard' (Hanging Loose, 2008) was a NY Times Book Review independent press best seller, and his next book, 'Vacations on the Black Star Line' (Hanging Loose, 2009) is forthcoming. Along with teaching writing workshops and performing across the country, he was previously the director of PEN Center West's 'Poet in the Classroom Program.' He was featured on season 5 of Russell Simmons' Def Poetry... Founded on the belief that teenagers can and must speak for themselves, Urban Word NYCâ,,¢ (UW) has been at the forefront of the youth spoken word, poetry and hip-hop movements in New York City since 1999. JON SANDS
Jon Sands has been a professional teaching & performing artist since 2007. He's a recipient of the 2009 New York City-LouderARTS fellowship grant, and has represented New York City multiple times at the National Poetry Slam, subsequently becoming an NPS finalist. His first full collection of poems, The New Clean, will be released this year from Write Bloody Publishing. Jon has performed and facilitated workshops with university and arts organizations throughout North America, and is currently the Director of Poetry and Arts Education Programming at the Positive Health Project, a syringe exchange center located in Midtown Manhattan, as well as a Youth Mentor with Urban Word-NYC. Jon's work has appeared in decomP magazinE,The Millions, Suss, The Literary Bohemian, Danse Macabre, The November 3rd Club, and others. He lives in New York City, where he makes better tuna salad than anyone you know.
The Mighty Third Rail, aside from being a clever riff on that special rail on the train tracks that will shock the ish out of you, and aside from being a metaphor in politics to avoid controversial issues, is also a brand spanking new band that mixes the elements of hip hop poetry, beatboxing, violin and bass. From poetry cafes to colleges to concert halls, whether it's jamming at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Cafe or performing at the prestigious Lincoln Center , The Mighty Third Rail undoubtedly delivers. A three man squadron featuring the dashing Darian Dauchan on vocals, the indelible Ian Baggette on bass, and the courteous Curtis Stewart on violin. When they're powers combine they produce a unique voltron of a sound the likes of which the world has never heard.
The Mighty Third Rail will perform: Death Boogie Excerpts
Death Boogie originally developed at the Dance Theatre Workshop is a multimedia Hip Hop poetry musical that follows the fictional story of Victor Spartan, a blue collar worker who lives a comatose lifestyle by day and at night, hears the poetic sounds of revolution. A theatrical and whimsical examination on the notion of martyrdom through the stories of a Greek Titan, a soldier, a child, a suicide bomber, a lion, and pop culture movies. Death Boogie is a solo piece featuring Darian Dauchan, with comic book illustrations by Jenny Koons and music accompaniment by The Mighty Third Rail.
The Robin and the Lady Poet are real-life lovers and storytellers that tell stories of romance, politics, and love through a blend of comedy, poetry and music.
The Robin and the Lady Poet: We Go Together
The Robin and the Lady Poet are a hybrid-mix of music, poetry and performance. Robin Andre (musician, singer/songwriter and performer) and Erica Miriam Fabri (poet and performer) are NYC-based artists and partners in love. Their work embraces romantic and political storytelling and a touch of sexy humor and genuine heart goes into all that they do.
Robin Andre is a Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter, performer and recording artist. He was signed to RCA records for his debut album "Paper Bag" and has recorded, performed and toured in 32 different countries world-wide with multi-platinum artists such as The Dave Matthews Band, The Fugees, Mariah Carey, Lil Flip and Inaya Day. His solo work is a tight blend of rock, hip-hop and reggae sensibility. His newest hit-sensation single, "Betty," is featured on itunes and he recently completed filming the colorful and funky music video by director, Jose Infante. Robin Andre, a natural entertainer, has also starred in award-winning musical theater productions, and worked as a commercial actor and professional dancer. He writes, performs and tours solo as well as in the duo "The Robin and the Lady Poet" and also can be seen performing live every week in his hometown with the iconic house band at the legendary "Village Underground" in Greenwich Village, NYC.
Erica Miriam Fabri is the author of "Dialect of a Skirt." She is a writer and performer and a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She received her MFA in Poetry from The New School. Her work has been published in numerous journals and magazines and she has facilitated workshops and seminars at Cooper Union School of the Arts, New York University, Columbia University and Penn State University. She has worked on projects as a writer, editor and performance director for The New York Knicks, HBO and Nickelodeon Television. Erica has been awarded a writer's residency at the Omega Institute, has been a featured and/or visiting poet/performer for drug rehabilitation centers, prisons and hospitals. Her first book, "Dialect of a Skirt," was included on the list for: The Best Books of 2009 at About.com and made the Small Press Distribution's Best-Seller list for June 2010. She is currently a spoken word mentor and curriculum writer for Urban Word NYC, a non-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing spoken word, poetry and hip-hop arts to inner-city teens. She also teaches Performance Poetry at Pace University, Creative Writing at The School of Visual Arts and a variety of Poetry courses at Baruch College and Hunter College of The City University of New York (CUNY).
