Concert 3 - Cypress Signature Series
The San Francisco-based Cypress String Quartet performs for the first time in New York in three intimate concerts at the Tenri Cultural Institute. The Plain Dealer of Cleveland recently praised the Cypress, saying "In the forest of Beethoven recordings, the Cypress String Quartet's are some of the mightiest trees."

The Quartet brings music that exemplifies its artistic mission to New York -- pieces from the core repertoire for string quartet (by Beethoven, Dvorak, and Debussy), music overlooked by history (by Griffes, Stravinsky, and Schulhoff) and new pieces commissioned by the ensemble (by Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon, George Tsontakis, and Elena Ruehr).

Program:
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 16 in F major, Op. 135
George Tsontakis: String Quartet No. 5 'In Memoriam George Rochberg' (NYC Premiere)
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Op. 130 (with Grosse Fuge)

A concert like this should not be missed.  Beethoven's late quartets are arguably the most profoundly spiritual music ever written.  Sunday's concert contains two late quartets, plus the Tsontakis Quartet #5, which was written for the Cypress.  The Cypress String Quartet has recorded both of these Beethoven quartets as part of the first and second volumes of their recordings of Beethoven's late quartets.  These recordings have received rave reviews. Fanfare Magazine wrote, "of the recent single entries I've heard, I would happily pick the Cypress."  Gramophone said, "Beethoven's late string quartets challenge even the most seasoned ensembles. Can musicians who have been together only a dozen or so years truly succeed in illuminating the riches?  In the case of the Cypress Quartet, the answer is an unqualified yes.  The San Francisco-based ensemble's Beethoven reveals artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion.  What wondrous artistry to behold."

George Tsontakis who will be at the concert for the NY premiere of his 5th quartet is one of the greatest composers of our time.  In addition to being the featured composer of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in 2008, George Tsontakis has won several of the world's most prestigious composition awards including the 2005 Grawemeyer Award for Music, Grammy Nominations for Best Classical Composer and the Ives Fellowship.

The Cypress formed in 1996 and currently performs over 90 concerts each year. In addition to its busy touring schedule, the Cypress is releasing a series of recordings of Beethoven's Late Quartets. Volume 1 was released in 2009, and Gramophone praised the disc as "revealing artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion." Volume 2 was released in August 2010 and Volume 3 will follow in 2011.

Seating is limited to 80 audience members and all are invited to stay for a wine and chocolate reception after each performance to meet and greet the Cypress String Quartet and the guest composers.
