Brian Finnegan & William Coulter/William Coulter & Barry & Shelley Phillips
Finnegan is widely regarded as one of Ireland's most exciting and innovative traditional flute and whistle players and was for a dozen years the creative and driving force of the dazzling band Flook. When Flook members decided to go their separate ways, Finnegan's meeting with Santa Cruz's Grammy Award-winning and Gourd Music recording artist, guitar guru Coulter at the Boxwood Flute Camp in Nova Scotia two years must have been kismet. The spirited sparks kindled thereby the kindred spirits fired the dynamic duo into succesful tours of California and Irleand last year. They now return to continue the craic. The description of Finnegan in 'Scotland on Sunday' would also well serve cohort Coulter; ' A thrilling talent, marvelous tachnical dexterity, bold musical imagination and urgent tone combining playing of breathtaking suppleness and delicacy. The first part of the concert will be an appearance by William Coulter and Barry and Shelley Phillips who have been performing traditional music together for over 25 years. Their repretoire spans the word of folk music; from Ireland to Sweden to China and back to the music of the American Shakers. Guitar, cello, harp, woodwinds and tabla combine to create a sound that is both magical and uplifting. William, Barry & Shelley have appeared on over 20 recordings on the Santa Cruz-based Gourd Music label, performed in venues worldwide and occassionally, as tonight, close to home.
