Puppet-o-Rama Presents: Karaghiozis Saves the Economy
Lee Center for the Arts Seattle, WA
Karaghiozis Saves the Economy is one of the dozens of neotraditional satyrical shadow plays that prove once more that slap-stick-shadow-adventurous-anarchy on the bigger than life screen can bring peace and magic to multicultural world.
Leonidas Kassapides is a Karaghizopektis: "traditional" Greek shadow theater artist, and was born in Thessaloniki, Greece . His grandfather with the same name was also a Karaghiozopektis and toured shadow plays on foot during the Nazi occupation. A researcher and collaborator of Asian, Greek, and middle eastern shadow theater, he writes, performs and tours dozens of old and new Karaghiozis stories full time. He is dedicated to continuing this art form through teaching the oral tradition of story telling and producing shows with students, dancers, and musicians from the Bay Area in CA.
