On the verge of suicide after being thrown out by his wife, compulsive neatnik Felix Unger moves in with his recently divorced poker buddy, Oscar Madison, an incorrigibly sloppy sportswriter. Within a few hot, sweltering, New York days, this mismatched pair is on the verge of mutual murder: Felix cannot abide Oscar's slovenliness, while Oscar is driven insane by Felix's obsession with cleanliness and his sabotaging of a potential love connection with the cuckoo Pigeon sisters.
