Sara Davis Buechner at the Queer Arts Festival

Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre
Vancouver, BC

Crossing the Concourse: Sara Davis Buechner in Music and Words

Join us for a rare and exclusive glimpse into the world of renowned concert pianist Sara Davis Buechner. In an intimate evening of half music and half words, Sara will trace her life story and transgender journey, illustrated with works by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Nishimura, Vancouver's own Jared Miller, and closing with Sara's signature finale, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Sara will talk about being the T in GLBT, and share with dignity and humour what she's learned along the way about gender, gender roles, and how preconceptions have both limited and enhanced her own life. It will be a night of breath-taking pianism, insight and laughter that will be long remembered and treasured by those lucky enough to hear it.

Artist talk-back following the show.

SARA DAVIS BUECHNER is a classical concert pianist whose performances and recordings have garnered acclaim on four continents. Career highlights include winning prizes in many of the world's most prestigious competitions, appearing with prominent orchestras world- wide, and an extensive list of recordings. Profiles of Ms. Buechner have appeared in The New York Times, The New York Times Magazine, Paris Match, Noticias del Argentina, Out, Blade and Frontiers magazines; and she has been featured on Entertainment Tonight, Extra, In the Life, NPR's The Fishko Files and Performance Today, WFMT's Dame Myra Hess Recital Series, WNYC's New Sounds with John Schaefer, and Westcoast Performance Today and Richardson's Roundup on Canada-wide CBC Radio 1 and 2.

Sara is a dazzling pianist and witty speaker, with a gregarious personality that leaps from the stage. In informal concerts she will chat delightfully about her cosmopolitan range of interests -- from baseball and classic cartoons, to New York art deco architecture and Japanese kabuki --  to connect with her audience on an intimate level, and make her music a personal and enchanting experience for everyone.

"Buechner has it all... intelligence, integrity and all-encompassing technical prowess" (Tim Page, The New York Times)
