Upstart Crow Theatreworks presents
Lessons from Cancer College
by Nancy K. Barry
directed by Eva Barr
performed by Kristen Underwood

Adapted from her memoir, Iowa writer Nancy K. Barry's "Lessons from Cancer College" is a play that speaks to anyone who has faced a challenge and been changed by it.

When a seasoned college professor is diagnosed with breast cancer, she assumes it will be a manageable task to continue teaching through treatment. But when the teacher becomes a studentof a disease, of a battery of treatments, and of her own changing body, she's surprised, and ultimately healed, by the revelation that while she thought she was teaching through cancer, somehow cancer had been teaching through her.

Nancy K. Barry, originally from Baltimore, has lived in Decorah, IA since 1990. She joined the English Department at Luther College after teaching at the University of Iowa and the University of Illinois, where she earned her Ph.D. She is the author of published essays, newspaper columns, and radio essays, and a long-time teacher at the University of Iowa's Summer Writing Festival.

The play is performed by Kristen Underwood, who holds her MFA in Acting from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and her BFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She has worked as an actor, director, and teacher around the country for the past 25 years and now lives in Decorah, IA where she teaches theatre as a guest artist at Luther College, is the founding director of Upstart Crow Theatreworks, and founding co-director of Decorah's non-profit art center, ArtHaus, www.arthausdecorah.org.

Eva Barr directed the original production. She is a founding ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company of Chicago, an independent theatre artist, artistic director of the Dreamery Rural Arts Initiative, and director of Flourish Summer Camp, which links the performing arts and agriculture in experiences for youth and adults.

Funds for the development of the project were awarded to Nancy K. Barry by the Iowa Arts Council; the play received its premier at ArtHaus in February, 2010. It has since been performed at a number of venues in Iowa and Minnesota, and will be presented by the Commonweal Theatre Oct 19-20.
