New Jersey's Native Bees
Michael Roswell

From crop pollination to conservation: linking native bees and native plants in New Jersey Dan will discuss the natural history, conservation, and ecological importance of native bees in New Jersey.

Michael Roswell is a pollination ecologist whose research is motivated by both sustainable food production and ecological theory. Michael went to Swarthmore College, where he studied Biology and Linguistics, and worked as a gardener in the world-class Scott arboretum. Before starting graduate school, Michael worked as a science educator in the Northeast and in Southern California. Michael joined the Winfree lab in spring of 2013, and started the Ph.D. program at Rutgers this fall. Michael's current research focuses on streamlining biodiversity studies for ecology, conservation, and restoration, because after a few years of working as an ecology field technician , he is concerned about allocating resources optimally.

Permaculture and Native Plants - Building Resilience, Diversity and Opportunity
Dale Hendricks

Permaculture provides us an opportunity to look at our landscapes and the native plant movement with fresheyes. How can the native plant and permaculture movements inform and enrich each other? Must we be at warwith invasive plants? Why are they moving and taking over so fast? Can we be a civilization of stewards and gardeners?

Dale Hendricks is owner of Green Light Plants in Landenberg PA. He produces native plants and plants for permaculture systems. He is a nationally recognized speaker on native plants, herbaceous perennials, native plant communities, use of biochar, & sustainability of both production systems & plant management systems.

Pine Belt Employments
Mark Demitroff

Here Mark provides a natural science-based overview of forest resource utility. Pinelands plants are not only beautiful to look at, but for over 400-years provided the raw materials needed for America's rapid industrialization.

Natural historian Mark Demitroff grew up on a Pinelands poultry farm, and gained a deep respect for the reserve's physical and cultural landscapes. He internationally lectures and publishes on regional land surface processes, raising serious questions about the health of South Jersey's shallow aquifer and has changed older interpretations of past climate change.

Native Plant Gardens on Display
Edith Wallace

The gardens of the Garden State Gardens Consortium feature historic houses and gardens, formal gardens, sculpture, and, of course, native plants displayed in this presentation.

Biologist Dr. Edith Wallace through her walks and talks shares her enthusiasm for the gardens and natural areas of New Jersey. www.edithwallace.info
