Don't miss the McKinney Summer Musicals 2010 production of Damn Yankees!
This year's offering by McKinney Summer Musicals will be the fourth in a series that thas been described as "redefining community theater", featuring a live orchestra together with Broadway caliber lighting, costumes, sets, acting, singing, and choreography.
The original Broadway production of Damn Yankees won seven Tony awards, including Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Gwen Verdon, Lola), Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Ray Walston, also known as Luther in South Pacific and as "My Favorite Martian" in televeision re-runs) as Applegate (The Devil)), and Best Choreography (Bob Fosse), and marked the beginning of Bob Fosse's collaboration with Gwen Verdon.
Damn Yankees is a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s in Washington D.C., when the New York Yankees dominated Major League Baseball.
With music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, this 1956 Tony Award winning Best Musical is a classic Broadway musical comedy in all its glory and McKinney Summer Musicals looks forward to presenting the show at its best.
Married middle-aged real estate agent and baseball fanatic Joe Boyd trades his soul to the Devil (the charming but devious Mr. Applegate) to become the young and strong slugger Joe Hardy, for a chance to lead his favorite team, the Washington Senators, to victory in the pennant race against the New York Yankees.
As baseball sensation, Joe Hardy, he transforms the hapless Washington Senators into a winning team only to realize the true worth of the life (and wife) he's left behind.
With the help of a handy escape clause and a guilt-ridden temptress named Lola, Joe outsmarts Applegate, returns to his former self and shepherds the Senators to the World Series.
Damn Yankees will be a sure-fire winner!
Familiar tunes include Heart, Shoeless Joe from Hannibal Mo, A Little Brains, A Little Talent, and, of course, Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets.
