The Exonerated
Culled from interviews, letters, transcripts, and case files, The Exonerated tells the true stories of six people who were convicted and sentenced to Death Row for crimes they did not commit. Collectively, the group spent over one hundred years in prison before the criminal justice system corrected its errors and freed them. Blank and Jensen document the stories of these individuals and the result is a shocking exposé of police and prosecutorial misconduct that led to the conviction and condemnation of the innocent. While the play chronicles the destruction of the former prisoners' lives and the cruelty of stolen time, woven into their stories are moments of humor and wit, combined with a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit, as hope and faith survive in even the bleakest of situations.
A powerful and moving play, The Exonerated has caught the attention of both politicians and activists concerning the issue of the death penalty. Critically examining issues of life, freedom, and innocence, this play is sure to spark dialogue on an already controversial issue.
