Nashville Now: 2010 Spoken Word Census
In a year when the federal government is quantifying the American populace, the Spoken Word Census will be a breathing portrait of Nashville, an urban diary, an effort to speak to our contemporaries, write our own history, and start a conversation with our future selves thirty years down the road.
The production will feature a series 16 to 20 short pieces written and performed by a diverse cast. Some of Nashville's most esteemed writers will read including poets like Bill Brown, Vince Santoro, Diallo, Thandiwe Shiprah, Tia Mitchell, Jene India, Tamiko Robinson, D-Revolution, the Mid South Slam Team, and Stephanie Pruitt; songwriters Kent Agee, Tom Kimmel, Damien Horne, Vince Melamed, Ross Falzone, and Matt Urmy; actors Jackie Welch and Mark Cabus; and writers Molly Secours, Linda Ragsdale, and John Egerton.
A different director will spearhead the production each night. Poet Kelly Falzone will produce Thursday nightâs show; Friday night will be directed by Destiny Theater Experience's Shawn Whitsell; and Saturday night will be directed by SistaStyle Production's Mary McCallum.
The event is produced by Youth Speaks Nashville in partnership with SistaStyle Poductions and Destiny Theater Experience and funded by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
