Stella was diagnosed with Leukemia on February 1st of this year. Her treatment involves three intensive rounds of chemotherapy, lasting about 6 weeks each, followed by a bone marrow transplant. Her best prognosis includes nearly constant hospital stay for the next year, followed by a long period of recovery. As Stella's family is learning, even a good insurance plan cannot cover all the costs of such a big illness. The direct costs to Stella's family will easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars. And, of course, the complexity of the healthcare insurance industry, especially in this period of transition, means that it is nearly impossible for Stella's family to plan for the long-term expense of Stella's illness.
