With its first full-evening concert of works since October 2005, d9 Dance Collective proudly presents PULP featuring the diverse styles and talents of four different dancemakers - Alianna Jaqua (Seattle), Laura Curry (Seattle), Keith Johnson (Long Beach), and Daniel Charon (NYC).  Take some solid dance technique, a sprinkle of provocation, a layer of emotional appeal, and a good dose of wacky fun - mix it all together and you've got PULP.  Performed and produced by the women of d9 Dance Collective, one of Seattle's longest-running dance companies, designed to share contemporary dance with the local community and beyond.

Alianna Jaqua is an emerging Seattle choreographer and well-regarded teacher and performer.  d9 was attracted to her fresh ideas, unique choreographic flavor and inventive sense of humor.  She has created a quartet for PULP - rooted in movement improvisation, weekly writing exercises and some spirited karaoke.  Laura Curry is a Seattle artist with a strong local reputation for pushing the boundaries of performance.  Her work is often site-specific, focuses on aspects of voyeurism, and challenges the role of the audience in the work.  d9 was attracted to Curry's creative process and, through discussions with her, proposed that she develop six independent solos for dancers in PULP.  The solos will be performed at different times - and in different locations in the Odd Fellows Building (including the building entryway, hanging from a curtain rod in the theater, and on the rooftop of an adjacent building).  d9 Dance Collective collaborated with Velocity Dance Center to bring Keith Johnson to Seattle in October 2006.  A well regarded instructor at California State University at Long Beach and former performer with Doug Varone and Dancers and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Johnson taught classes and workshops for Velocity and, while in town, worked with d9 to set a beautiful and moving trio on the Collective.  Daniel Charon has created a new, athletic and emotionally charged dance for 6 of the d9ers.  He has been a member of Doug Varone and Dancers since 1999 and before that was with the Limon Dance Company for three years.

For the first time in its history, d9 has established a small tour to follow these Seattle performances of PULP.  The Collective will take the show to The Firehouse Performing Art Center in Bellingham on May 11 and to Peninsula College in Port Angeles on June 16.

d9 Dance Collective is a dancer-driven organization, based in Seattle since 1992, dedicated to promoting and stimulating high quality contemporary dance and performance through choreographic commissions, performances, workshops and educational activities.
